I wanted to post a thread geared toward pre-admits in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts (ALB) Program. I'm curious which professor everyone decided to go with for their "gateway" course into the degree program?

I took Expo E25 with Lindsay Silver Cohen. It was a great course. She covered the Industrial Era. The class would read books such as, "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair and John Riis’ "How the Other Half Lives". What I liked most about this course, and this professor in particular, was the amount of feedback she gave for each paper and draft that was turned in. She really put forth a great deal of effort to ensure that her students had the proper tools to be an effective writer and critical reader. She is pretty no-nonsense though. Don't expect to coast in any EXPO E-25 course.

Let us know who you are planning to or took EXPO E-25 with.

For instance, if a student is studying Philosophy, they can have an advisor whose background could be Biology and could also have other advisees who have other polarizing concentrations/FoS.

I'm personally pursuing an ALB in Computer Science but my advisor's background is Music. I don't think it's a good fit. I may have specific questions about the industry, organizations, or certain professors or research efforts in the university but I believe I'm missing out on those opportunities and connections if my background doesn't match my advisor's.

I'm not saying I'm looking for an advisor who personally studied CS when they were in college but at least someone who works directly with the CS department. Someone who's updated on the CS specialties, national scholarships and internships, graduate school guidance, and can provide more than just picking classes and other administrative responsibilities.

My brother flew in from California and I was hoping he could sit with my parents instead. My parents are not super mobile and I am worried about them getting a bit lost in the crowd and it would be nice for them to be together.

In return, I am willing to do any of the following, or possibly more:

- tell you the best kept secrets of Harvard/Harvard Extension after spending many years here
- babysit rowdy kids
- tell unfunny jokes
- attempt to help you fix something mechanical or electronically, though there's not a huge percentage chance of success
- trade you something (tell me what kind of stuff you like)
- show you one Tai Chi move
- share my newfound pen hobby with you
- explain how to maintain cars
- answer questions about reef ecology
- share my philosophies on life
- argue whether Garfield was one of the best comics ever

Thanks and congrats to everyone who's graduating.

I am looking for 2 tickets for the ALM Information technology degree commencement ceremony in Christ Church Cambridge, Zero Garden Street on May 24th 2018. My mom is traveling from India ( who doesn't speak English) just for this event. My wife and 2 younger kids would love to be there. With 2 tickets provided by Harvard, there is no easy way to bring just 2 people from my family. Also, we all are flying from Phoenix, Arizona for the event. It would be a bummer to travel all the way and not attend the ceremony in person. I truly appreciate anyone considering to help us out. Thanks in advance.

Hey everybody, nice looking forum here.

After aimlessly taking a melange of classes over the past few years, I've decided to buckle down on CS, and push to graduate within a few years. I'm currently in an ALB program with a concentration in sciences, and have a GPA of about 3.9. I haven't declared a field of study yet. Your announcement about a CS path was very helpful.

I'm a vocational software developer: I learned to code through self-practice and about a decade of working in IT-type jobs where simple coding in Perl, Shell Scripts, and PHP became a well-practiced skill. Over the past 5 years, I've worked as a web developer, using Python, JavaScript, Elixir, and a handful of other languages. Though I can hack my way through making something in lower-level languages like Java and C, they aren't really my forté... though I'm not particularly worried about picking them up quickly if I need to.

So I've clearly got practical coding skills and experience up the wazoo, but I've got very little of the math/theory knowledge taught in a good Computer Science program. Unfortunately, when I was in high school 20 years ago, I didn't even complete Algebra 2 before being booted from school, (ironically because I spent all of my time in the computer lab instead of going to class.)

Wanting to be sure I have good, fresh math skills to move forward, I've started essentially taking math from scratch. I took MATH E-3 and am currently taking MATH E-8 (which is probably where I should have started TBH,) and I'm assuming that I will have to take MATH E-10 (Precalculus) and MATH E-15. Should I take MATH E-16? Would there be a significant advantage for an aspiring computer scientist to take Linear Algebra rather than going straight CSCI E-20? I'm not interested in taking shortcuts, but I'm also not interested in taking far more classes than I need to, considering I work full time can can't take more than 2 or so classes at once.
