Another advantage of participating in an online community over the Harvard campus is that extension students can develop permanent relationships with other extension students that being on a physical campus might not necessarily allow, since online students are great at staying in touch online.

    We'd be glad to hear your feedback.     Software engineering project-based courses

    I'm pursuing the masters in software engineering, and I want to stack my courses towards (1) project-based classes, preferably projects that could go on a resume, bonus points if the projects are the type I can throw on github, and (2) where only a small portion of the grade comes from testing -- or, better, none!

    Does anyone have suggestions for courses like this?  I'm trying to get one for as many categories as I can :)

      I have similar feelings about what I like to get out of my HES courses.  Here are some of such courses:

      CSCI E-3 Introduction to Web Programming Using JavaScript
      CSCI E-12 Fundamentals of Web Site Development
      CSCI E-15 Dynamic Web Applications (there are weekly, timed, online, open-book quizzes however.  No proctor needed.)
      CSCI E-18 Web Development Using XML
      CSCI E-33 Programming Microsoft .NET
      CSCI E-35 Essential Modern UI Windows 8.1 App Development & Cloud Computing
      DGMD E-25 Introduction to Web Content Management Systems Site Development
      DGMD E-27 Modern and Mobile Front-End Design 2 (Part 1 of this course doesn't count towards the Software Engineering ALM)

      I've heard these courses don't have exams, but I am less knowledgeable about the kind of projects that are required:
      CSCI E-55 Java and the Hadoop Distributed File System
      CSCI E-64 Mobile and Cloud Computing
      CSCI-E 97 Software Design: Principles, Models, and Patterns

      There are other courses as well that match the above preferences.  If you see a course you are interested in, it's usually possible to google it plus the word "syllabus" to find that course's syllabus, and then it's easy to see if there are exams and what kind of projects are assigned.  

      I'd be glad to hear if anyone else knows more courses like the above that are all or nearly all project-based, hopefully with marketable skills and a nice addition to your GitHub portfolio.

      I think it's important to distinguish assigned final projects like those that are in CSCIE-55, CSCIE-97 or CSCIE-98. I doubt that you can really show them, at least typically instructors ask not to share solutions because they're reusing the assignments annually.

      However, many courses ask you to implement an independent final project (CS109, CS51, CS50, CSCIE-15, CSCIE-90) which you can definitely post on github.
